Using GDAL to Translate US Topo PDF's
The US Topo topographic 7.5 minute quadrangle maps are one of the most popular products produced by the National Geospatial Progam of the USGS. The newest version of the US Topo is packaged as a layered GeoPDF which is available through the USGS's nationalmap.gov. Though the layered GeoPDF may be convenient for the layman, the nationalmap.gov is always receiving requests for other, more versatile raster formats. To address the issue, we have turned to GDAL for format translation, re-projection, and layer customization to produce GeoTiffs, JPEG2000, and other more GIS capable formats.
We've started with a basic "How To" guide on translating the US Topo GeoPDF's with GDAL but have plans to build a more robust web services to create different formats for our users. This talk will cover: the origin of the problem, the tools and drivers we use, how to customize your own US Topo, and how GDAL will be instrumental as the USGS begins to move products and processing to the cloud.
