Musings on building a sustainable local geo community

The strength and diversity of a thriving open geo community is very important for its sustainability. There are hundreds of local geo community groups that either explicitly or tangentially touch on the value of open source. These groups present huge opportunity to collaborate and work together to connect people and ideas geographically. This, in turn, builds a robust international community of individuals passionate about geography and technology.

Many of these groups are built on volunteerism and dedication. This talk will discuss the role of collaboration and volunteerism in our geo community at the local level. I’ll outline some of the specific successes of these groups and some tenets of building a lasting and successful local geo community. A group discussion will follow.
